What do you need to know about free software?

I have already played as Dale and the High Elves. With Dale i was totally ass raped by Rhun and everything was going fine with the elves until i started expanding.

My main problem is that as soon as i start an invasion my economy collapses with just a few armies and as soon as my armies start advancing thru enemy territory they suddenly spam 3 full armies while all i have is a fucked up half full army and a bankrupt economy.

I don't understand what do i have to do to not fail everytime, i upgrade rverything, build the most important building and then attack, yet the same result.

I did pretty fine in Empire: total war and with the Jerusalem campaign in Medieval II but i can't figure this one out. Any help will be appreciated.
