It’s National Ice Cream Sandwich Day! And who doesn’t like rich ice cream sandwiched between two wafer cookies? We’re celebrating with So Delicious Dairy-Free Ice Cream Sandwiches – what about you?

Perhaps, we like them a little too much. Though I am by no means a calorie counter, I must admit to feeling some pangs of guilt when I turn over a frozen treat wrapper to discover that I just inhaled over 300 calories while sedentarily sitting at my computer. But the So Delicious Minis pictured above are my indulgent little solution: perfectly-sized, guilt-free, dairy-free ice cream sandwiches.

Tasting Notes for the Coconut Milk So Delicious Dairy-Free Ice Cream Sandwiches

Available in Vanilla, Coconut and Banana Split, these little gems have just 100 calories each, yet they aren’t made with any artificial sweeteners! The frozen filling is sweetened solely with agave nectar.

Vanilla

The Vanilla treat was an amazing experience – Like a jumbo coconut-inspired Oreo cookie with a super-thick frozen filling. The cookies still had a slightly crispy, wafer-cookie like feel, which was really pleasant. Though I could easily see how rich and smooth the ice cream filling was going to taste, it was really firm and dense. The ice cream did indeed taste “premium” and the cookies had a mild and gently sweet chocolate flavor. I didn’t get the chance to trial the Coconut flavor, but imagine that it would be similar.

My husband immediately exclaimed, “These are really good.” Even though he’s not a coconut fan. The incredible taste and texture really surprised him.

Banana Split

These were like dozens of childhood food memories wrapped up into a small but satisfying treat. The flavors were all strangely familiar, and provided an overall feeling of well-being like I enjoyed as a kid when I had not a care in the world.

My taste buds could clearly identify the banana, strawberry, and chocolate ice cream flavors – all with a very refreshing taste. The cookies on this one were softer, forgiving, and slightly fudgy. Yet, there were no sticky fingers or tumbling crumbs; in fact, I didn’t even need a napkin! If you have ever seen me eat anything that drips, pours, smooshes, or spreads, then you will know that “not messy” is hard to come by.

My husband, who is more of a coconut supertaster, also loved them. He agreed that the intended flavors took center stage. Actually, he was so smitten by both the vanilla and banana split sandwiches that he went back for a frozen treat every afternoon until both boxes had vanished.

You might be wondering, as I was, “If they were so great, then how could my sugar-addicted husband stop at one?” Here were my husband’s actual words: “There really is something to dairy and addiction. When I eat these ice cream sandwiches I feel good and satisfied. They taste great and I feel like I just had a good dessert, but I don’t feel sick or weighed down. In the past when I ate dairy ice cream, I never felt fulfilled, I always wanted more and I felt physically horrible afterward.”

Tasting Notes for Almond Milk So Delicious Dairy-Free Ice Cream Sandwiches

Weighing in at an even lighter 90 calories, these Vanilla dairy-free ice cream sandwiches hit the sweet spot. The ice cream is richly vanilla, but refreshingly light with a definite almond essence. The cookies are extremely tender, if not a bit sticky! They have a dessert-like vibe that isn’t overly sweet, but rather compliments the cool and creamy filling. Both Tony and I would have liked a thicker ice cream center, but they were still so satisfying.

The almond milk sandwiches have a different sweetener base that includes erythritol and monk fruit – still with a relatively pure flavor but a little sharper sweetness. Kylie didn’t love them, as they were “different” in flavor from the ice cream truck sandwiches. That’s okay though, more for me!

Tasting Notes for Soy Milk So Delicious Dairy-Free Ice Cream Sandwiches

The “low commitment” of the Minis concept provoked So Delicious to go all in. They let go of their traditionally-sized sandwiches in favor of the little guys in their soy milk-based line, too. And I can’t say that it was a bad move.

Vanilla

As I peeled back the wrapper of the Vanilla, I was amazed by how spot on the box image was. The look and feel were so comfortably familiar. In fact, if you look up ‘ice cream sandwich’ on Wikipedia, the picture shown could easily be mistaken for a soy-based So Delicious dairy-free ice cream sandwich.

With my first bite I confirmed that the taste and texture easily kept pace with this dessert’s accurate image. The cookie enclosures were soft, cake-y wafers that tasted more sweet than chocolate. My taste buds were overjoyed by the return of this very memorable flavor from days long past. Trapped in the center was a thick cool layer of their soy-based ice cream. While I could detect the slight notes of soymilk, it was invisible to a second taste-tester. Overall, it was a delightfully refreshing treat that didn’t cross the line to sickeningly sweet.

Neapolitan

We later sampled the Neapolitan with nearly equal delight. The Vanilla section was as described above, the Strawberry portion had a pure, scrumptious taste, but the Chocolate part wasn’t too our liking. It was a bit harsh, flat and contrasting.
