The other gun we picked up in our trade is a CZ 527 American in 223. Now, I already have a CZ 527 American in 22 Hornet. Why bother getting another 527 in 223?
It's actually a part of our shooting plan for 2014. Bill and decided there is no reason for us to shoot the big stuff, so we want to stay with easy to shoot, fun guns and both the 22 Hornet and the 223 are fun to shoot cartridges, easy on the shoulder and not at all loud. Did I mention accurate?
One advantage of the 223, of course, is ballistics. The Hornet starts to go rainbow on me as far as the trajectory at about the 150 yard mark. After all, it's basically a re-loadable 22 magnum. The 223 gets me another 900 fps and more with the same bullet weight. That is a BIG step up in terms of velocity and energy and useable trajectory, but without taking our shoulder off.
The 223 is also a MUCH better choice than the Hornet when it comes time to find factory ammo to shoot, especially if you want to shoot for fun and not have to reload. That's us. This year we decided that I have been stretched way too thin at the loading bench, so back to fun rifles that allow us to shoot cheap factory ammo. About the only cheaper centerfire rifle ammo in our area is 7.62x39. Of course, I can still load the 223 and I do. Just that there days when we just want to go over to the 100 and 200 yard range and just shoot up cheap ammo and not take things too seriously.
If you've never seen a CZ 527, it is a beautiful mini Mauser action, scaled down in all proportions for the likes of the 222, 22 Hornet and 223. The 527 also has a set trigger which I love.
Not an ugly gun, either, but, then, when I have ever brought an ugly gun home? Never!
