posted 10-29-15 01:14 PM CT (US) Have a look at this online quiz created by Spirit of the Law (a popular AoE2 youtuber, for those who are unfamiliar). Although I don't agree with the way several of the questions/answers were laid out or phrased (especially from a competitive standpoint), I was intrigued by the fact that my quiz result was Vikings, which indeed is one of my favorite civs to play (and study historically, for that matter) Have a look at the quiz, post your results, and discuss! posted 10-29-15 01:17 PM CT (US) 1 / 20 I really can't recommend this quiz. I took it a while ago and declared paladins, halberdiers and siege onagers as important.. and was given the Turks. Also even having the option of not wanting to research blacksmith techs at all is a bit.. repelling. posted 10-29-15 01:32 PM CT (US) 2 / 20 I took the quiz a while ago and was given the Franks, whuch is my top 3 favorite civs so I am happy with the result. I agree with the fact that the quiz is more oriented toward the casual player and there are several bias, one of them giving an equal importance to each question. And the results are surprising, I mean Franks should be the second most popular civ ? Not very accurate. |
ArcherHombre Squire | posted 10-29-15 01:51 PM CT (US) 3 / 20 Yeah, it asked questions that are non-sequitur. Believe it or not, I hardly ever use the onager-line (prefer scorps so I can fire into my own lines). I actually don't ever care about hoardings or architecture. If you have to rely on building HP to keep you in the game, you're already losing, is what I say. I did get Goths, which is amusing because they are my go-to when playing pick-civs. But really I can play anything except Vikings on bf.. even my will to play kind of gives up really early. |
posted 10-29-15 03:14 PM CT (US) 4 / 20 I got Goths as always as I like being fast and aggressive while throwing one type of units at the opponent. Now if they only had arbalests.. (The above poster is right, did you know that?) Proud associate of Monsoon Studios |
posted 10-29-15 04:21 PM CT (US) 5 / 20 Even for me was given the Turks (that I really don't like) even if I didn't put on my importance the gunpowder units, but instead I choos the FU Halberdier (That Turks don't gets), then I choose for the Eagle Warrior instead Cavalry and what..Turks that have one of the best Light Cavalry/Hussar and not the Eagles.. so it's a bit weird.. |
Devious Dev Official Professional Qualified Noob (id: dragonslayermcmx) | posted 10-29-15 04:31 PM CT (US) 6 / 20 I did this when it first came out, now if only I could remember what Civ I got Edit: Ugh, Persians. posted 10-29-15 05:27 PM CT (US) 7 / 20 I got Huns when I did that thing. I said I like siege rams, siege onagers, good trash and I did not care for not having paladins. Of all those things, only the first is true to the Huns. It's not really a good quiz. I see Spirit of the Law's videos and he mentioned there were a lot of complains from people who got stuff like Goths when they were aiming for other specific civs. I think the main problem stems from each question having equal weight. posted 10-29-15 06:29 PM CT (US) 8 / 20 I got Goths. Surprised, but not disappointed by any means. Goths are my favourite civ to play, but I didn't know my playing style suited them and I thought some of the answers I put would rule them out, but.. |
posted 10-29-15 06:31 PM CT (US) 9 / 20 I just did it and got the Teutons. It's probably because I said something about liking towers. Other than that I generally gave balanced answers, since I prefer to have a balanced tech tree available to me with many unit choices. In casual games I'll often play as Byzantines or Spanish because they both get a very full tech tree. I suppose I should try the Teutons a bit more, it does seem like they suit my play-style. ..../¯/ ..../ / / Check out my Blacksmith submissions as well as my stuff in the Steam Workshop. ...// / ...//_/_Proud guardian of the Updated New RMS Guide<<<version 3 is out<<< ../_____ ../ and the Random Map Scripting Links and FAQ thread. posted 10-30-15 06:02 AM CT (US) 10 / 20 Hey I got Vikings! Last time I got Japanese. My favorite civs Japanese (Samurai and Arbs and Scorps and Onagers and super trebs) Vikings (Champs and Pikemen! Pikemen are cooler than halbs. Also good siege, if only they didn't suck vs late game monsters like Huns and Mongols) Franks (castle spam. Paladins with Axemen and scorpions. More castle spam) Britons (champs with longbows and trebs. Keeps that actually work) Teutons (Teutonic Knight and the architecture. Make Bbtower I guess) Also enjoy playing late game Huns when I delete all my villagers. And go full pop cav archer paladin siege ram push [This message has been edited by local boi (edited 10-30-2015 @ 06:10 AM).] |
Excelsior Squire | posted 10-30-15 08:21 AM CT (US) 11 / 20 Ooh, I got Mongols! |
posted 10-30-15 03:22 PM CT (US) 12 / 20 It gave me Teutons, which is my favorite civilization, but the questions kind of lead to that. |
posted 10-31-15 10:39 PM CT (US) 13 / 20 Got Teutons. My favourite AoC civ is Vikings. |
posted 11-01-15 11:12 PM CT (US) 14 / 20 I prefer to evaluate civs on a pass/fail basis. I have a bunch of questions in mind like 'How does this civ help me with feudal warfare?' or 'How does this civ handle cavalry?' or 'What do I do when gold runs out?' and if any have an unsatisfactory answer the civ fails and I won't pick it. But I don't really care about having any specific unit. Except villagers. I refuse to play a civ without villagers and if I draw one in random I'll immediately quit in disgust. posted 11-03-15 07:21 PM CT (US) 16 / 20 I tried it and it gave me a 60% Match with the Goths I was happy however, that one of the top three included my fav civ the Byzantines |
posted 11-04-15 12:44 PM CT (US) 17 / 20 Franks, even though i answered don't care about knights. In its defense though, I only had a 44% match. |
posted 11-04-15 01:39 PM CT (US) 18 / 20 If I were designing such a quiz, I'd make the questions focus more on gameplay styles/situations than on the tech tree. I'd maybe throw in some miscellaneous questions (like historical preference, for example) as well to add a different dimension to the quiz. From the looks of many of the results (my own included, considering the percentages) there are definitely more accurate ways to measure this sort of thing than solely focusing on the tech tree. posted 11-09-15 04:50 PM CT (US) 19 / 20 I think that giving points for lacking non-preferred units/techs was a mistake. It assumes all civs are on the same budget. They're not. It's remotely possible that they were designed that way before any balance patches or expansions, but nobody plays without The Conquerors and if civs were balanced to a budget originally they certainly weren't after or they would all have had to have gotten the same level of buffing. There's some speculation in the Youtube comments that this sort of thing is why the Goths were over-recommended. Lots of people don't really care about walls The devs are smart enough to know that the paladin upgrade has less value for the Byzantines than it does for the Spanish because the Spanish get better value from the pre-paladin units and that neither values the paladin as much as the Persians since both have an alternative way to fill the heavy cavalry role and Persia doesn't. This quiz lacks that. If I don't like paladins that's a strike against the Franks and Persians. It's less of one against the Huns or Spanish, who have other tricks, and really none at all against the Celts of Byzantines who aren't really expected to go for them at all. As a public service I present Doug Thompson's civ thread collections: Saracen/TurkMongolsJapanesePersians |
posted 11-10-15 09:47 AM CT (US) 20 / 20 That's a good assessment, and along the lines of what I was thinking as well. The tech tree is indeed only one piece of the puzzle when it comes to analyzing civs. 'Cattle die, kindred die, every man is mortal: But the good name never dies of one who has done well.' - Hávamál 'Hockey is the only sport left for true men.' - ax_man1 |
